Whole School Commitment
A commitment from all sectors of the school to become more sustainable is crucial for a whole school cultural change. Without this commitment, change will occur only in isolated pockets in the school. If this element is missing there will be inertia and resistance.
One very important step in making a commitment to Sustainable Schools is to prepare a school sustainability policy. Williamstown High School has a detailed sustainability policy which has influenced the design and construction of their new Bayview St.Campus.
Once a policy has been written, present it along with action plans to school council for ratification. This ensures the support of council and enables them to plan for any possible expenditure on the budget. Make sure you keep the school community informed of the newly ratified sustainability policy by printing the policy in school newsletters or on the school website.
